Following the fancy dress parade tomorrow ...

RAF Coningsby has said that they are planning a flypast in a World War II Spitfire from the Battle of Britain Memorial Flight at approx 13.40 hrs local (give or take a few minutes) on Saturday 25 June during the commencement of the Welwyn Festival's Family Fun Day - and may ‘tip their wings’ to us as they return home from their national Armed Forces Day display.

We are really excited about this and thank Wing Commander Brayshaw (whose home is in Welwyn) for arranging it. He told us that there is no problem with Luton airport being so close as the Spitfire flies at a lower altitude than commercial flights and the Luton navigation beacon isn't required as they fly using an old fashioned compass - and Google maps!!

The pilot says that the Spitfire should approach from the south, along (above!) the high street and over the festival. He will probably buzz us a few times then with a ‘waggle’ of wings depart to his next venue.

Exhibition by various Welwyn artists. Paintings, prints, sculpture, etchings, woodcuts and jewellery. Refreshments in aid of Danesbury Hospital.

Please note that on page 23 of the printed programme, the additional information for this event stated an incorrect time and place (6pm at the Civic Centre) when it is actually from 12-5pm at 44 Mill Lane as given above, below and in the pull-out programme.

We apologise for this error and hope not nobody is disappointed as a result.

Who can Apply?
The contest is open to young people who are between the ages of 11 and 18 and live in Welwyn or the local area. The contest is open to individual performers or small groups. To apply complete the application form and return it but hurry! You need to book your place by Friday 10th June so that we can make sure you have everything you need to WOW the audience.

When is It?
The contest takes place in the main hall of the Welwyn Sports and Social Club in Ottway Walk on Tuesday, June 21st from 8 - 10.30pm. Entrants will be able to rehearse beforehand. The winners of both age groups will be offered the opportunity to perform in the Welwyn prom concert on Friday 24th June.

After a very successful Welwyn Festival Week in June this year, featuring over 70 events over 10 days and attended by over 4,000 local residents, £3,000 was raised for local charity and social groups to aid their work. Last week the charity representatives gathered in Welwyn to collect their cheques and had an opportunity to meet the Welwyn Festival Committee and explain how the money will be used:

Herts Air Ambulance needs well over £100,000 a month to keep flying, helping all kinds of patients, from motor accidents to heart attacks;
Welwyn Playground Support Group are pushing hard to raise £100k plus in the next 2 years, to replace old and dangerous equipment at the local playing fields;
Stuart Centre offers a place for local residents to socialise, and hopes to offer a day trip to people with the money raised;
Jubilee House in WGC provides support to over 100 local families with one or more children and adults with various disabilities, and their carers for respite stays. The money donated will help create a sensory room, which residents will find aids their peace of mind;
SERV are a group of local motorcyclists who volunteer themselves and their bikes, free of charge, to ferry critical blood supplies from north London to local hospitals in all weathers and times of night, 365 days of the year (two WFG committee members are volunteers for this service);
We all know friends or relatives who have benefited from McMillan Cancer Care Service. With a local office in Welwyn, the Festival Committee is delighted to provide assistance to help them continue their wonderful work.

The Welwyn Festival Group is looking for 2011 charities and social groups to support with funds raised from the 2011 Festival – the 37th - which will take place from 17th-27th June.

The Welwyn Mystery Plays organising committee will be donating £700 from their takings to the WFG funds, also donating other amounts to St Mary's Church, St Mary's School and the St John's Ambulance Brigade.

"Dear All

Although not a resident of Welwyn, my wife and I always try to attend your Fun Day. Having been involved with smilar activities for several years, we know only too well how much work goes into the preparation for such a day.

I must congratulate everyone who was involved in last Saturdays event it was fantastic! You always seem to get a really well balanced programme of events as well as interesting stalls to ponder over. Two points I would like to make concern the Dog Show and the Archery display. The presenter of the Scruffs Dog Show was so good, he made me laugh out loud several times as his wit and general comments were so relevant, yet not offensive. I tried to catch up with him after the event to shake his hand, but he quickly disappeared into the crowd. My bet is that he might be a teacher, as his demeanor and manner with the children was so understanding.

The archery stand was also amazing. Not necesarily shooting arrows, but listening to a man called John, who was obviously connected with the group, whose knowledge of the English Long Bow and it's history was truly outstanding. I could have listened to him for hours as he was so interesting and full of facts about the likes of Robin Hood and the Battle of Agincourt etc. I learnt so much in a short space of time it was incredible.

Anyway, I musn't ramble on too much, well done to everyone who was connected with the organisation of this event and I hope you raised plenty of money for your chosen charities.

I am already looking forward to next year!

We are pleased to announce that Hertbeat Radio, now Jack FM, is supporting the Welwyn Festival.

The local radio station, based in Knebworth Park, has publicised various Festival events on air over the years; this year it is planning for the StreetBeat team to cover the carnival parade.

HertBeat FM announced a change of name to 106JackFM this week; the changeover stretching the few core members of the team to ensure that it all goes smoothly. The Welwyn Festival Group wishes "Jack" the very best of luck going forward.

Went to Merle Rook's talk last night - she has so many stories of her life with Tony (with asides from he man himself and their daughter Sylvia) that everyone was enthralled. Some lovely pics of them when much younger as well as more recent ones.

The previous evening we went to the two Open Gardens - very different in size - the first one in Norman Road is absolutely brimming with plants and has winding paths and hidden areas so you can't see any houses around, which is amazing; the other, in Elmore Avenue, is maturing with shrubs round the lawn, seating areas and wonderful raised beds with veggies.

Looking forward to the Barn Dance tomorrow - drinks are BYO, which isn't mentioned in the programme. IF ANYONE IS THINKING OF COMING, PLEASE ORDER YOUR TICKETS ASAP as we need to order the fish & chips! Call Jane Hawkes on Welwyn 840224.

"Welwyn's Got Talent" Winners

The Welwyn Festival Group gives a huge thank you to everyone involved in this year's WGT, especially Christine Goodwin for masterminding its organisation, once again!

Christine has provided this report:

You’ve heard of Britain’s Got Talent. Well a lot of it is in Welwyn, as we discovered at the Welwyn’s Got Talent event held on Tuesday 23rd June as part of the Welwyn Village festival week. People queued outside the Welwyn Sports and Social Club, eagerly waiting for the doors to open.

Sixteen young people, aged between 11 and 18, took part in the talent contest and provided a wonderful evening of entertainment. There was a huge variety of acts including a rock band, singing from the pop music, musical theatre and classical genres, plus ballet and modern dancing, freestyle football skills and belly dancing.

The standard of performance was so high that the judges, Brian King, Dyllis Buckley and Caroline Barlow, were unable to choose a single winner in the younger age group.

The joint winners of the younger age group were 14 year old Georgie Sheed, who sang “Pie Jesu” and “Wishing You Were Somehow Here Again” from the Phantom of the Opera, and 13 year old Laura Jeffries who sang “Wouldn’t It Be Luverly” from My Fair Lady and “Nobody Does It Like Me” performed with tap dancing. The close runner up was 11 year old Josh Clancy who wowed the audience with his football skills.

The senior winner was 16 year old Laura Ellis who sang Leonard Cohen’s “Hallelujah” and “Someone’s Watching Over Me” by John Shanks. Runner up was 15 year old Emma Cook who sang “Make You Feel My Love” by Adele.

Prizes were donated by Hills, the violin and string instruments shop in Welwyn, Let’s Dance, the dance and fancy dress shop in Shoplands, and the Welwyn Festival Group.

Tom Gearing provided piano accompaniment and Ian Drewitt was MC of the event. Our thanks to them all for helping to make this a successful event.

It's a busy week for the WFG Chair!

Yesterday, Andy Trotter found time to write this ...

Open Gardens, Sunday: a lovely combination of formal garden, with specimen trees set into a lawn, pond with carp, allotment on a grand scale, and fruit trees and flowers in abundance. Bumped into committee member Shirley Guy, who 'adopted' a Canadian couple visiting their daughter this week, and they say that they intend to book to see her again next year in Welwyn Festival Week!

Open Gardens, Monday: committee member Ruth Brett and her two neighbours' gardens looked a picture - and quite a contrast - one having a large allotment/fruit tree area, another partly that and part garden, with Ruth's being mainly garden. All very well presented. The WGF Chairman's wife won the star prize in the tombola too, a lovely white rose - and it was not a fix!

Sunday, I went to a small event at the Roman Baths, which 40 people attended; the Roman soldier in full armour was very warm!

Also went to Gordon Longmead's and the Ayot and Welwyn WI's craft displays:
- The WI's was of their work and photos/memorabilia;
- Gordon's was of thousands of photos covering animals, birds, local people and sites;
Photographs and displays were to a professional standard, stunning!

Saturday, following the Street Market and lunch at the Wellington, I went to the talk on "They put a man on the moon!" It described how they did it, how some crackpots claimed it was a stage set - and proved how it was not. Unfortunately, it was a very small audience, very disappointing for Jerry, who is a highly qualified speaker. We will try holding the talk on a different night next year.

Tonight (Tuesday) I am off to two gardens, the films, book swap and Welwyn's got Talent.

Dolesbury Drive Open Gardens

"A Hertfordshire pub dating back to the 1300s has been gutted by fire - but the damage isn't so bad that it'll need to be pulled down.

The fire service sent eight fire engines to The Wellington on Welwyn High Street at 4.15am today (Tues 23).

The roof's collapsed, and part of the road will need to be cordoned off all day because of the risk of falling tiles."

This will impact Welwyn Festival events. We'll try to find out more and keep you posted.

We have a number of artists, both amateur and professional, in Welwyn. This year, Anneli Boon, Willow Watercolours and Welwyn Art Group contributed, once again, by holding exhibitions during Welwyn Festival Week.

Pictured is Rhoda Mowbray and Geraldine Moss of the Welwyn Art Group, who tell us that new members or visitors to their group are very welcome. They paint for enjoyment and relaxation, occasionally showing off their works and are thrilled if people purchase their paintings.

The Street Market

Well attended - a great turnout, overall pretty good weather. The Scouts bird boxes sold well and the tombola sold out in record time! The hurdy-gurdy man provided pleasant background music, people were buying tickets for the grand prize draw and annual duck race (both take place next Saturday) and the atmosphere was ambient.

In the church, Welwyn St Marys and Oaklands school choirs sang beautifully, people enjoyed refreshments, fitter people enjoyed a view from the Church Tower. When the Street Market was over, there were the art exhibitions and photographic history display to visit and, of course, lunch in the pubs.

Time Team Welwyn Archaeological Society

The Welwyn Archaeological Society is hosting a talk by Carenza Lewis from Channel 4's Time Team.

To hear "Currently Occupied Rural Settlements" will cost £5 at the door of the Civic Centre at 8pm on Monday 22nd June (and not £2 as stated in the printed programme; our apologies).

Welwyn Archaeological Society members are looking for volunteers to have one square metre of their garden dug up for analysis to see what was happening there in the dark ages or other era of Welwyn's history. Volunteers should call 01438 715300 to declare their interest.

Badger Watch

Watch Badgers from a Hide in Tewin on Monday 22nd or Wednesday 24th June at 9pm sharp for a minimum donation of £5 per adult (£3 per child).

The sett has over 10 badgers and you may also see foxes, muntjac deer, bats and owls.

Silence is the key as badgers have very good hearing and will remain hidden if they are suspicious of noisy intruders - even whispers can be heard several metres away. They also have a good sense of smell.

Badger watchers need to dress warmly as sitting still in the evening can be a dramatic contrast to the daytime warmth and to choose dark clothing to be inconspicuous.

Cat Survival Trust

One of the Welwyn Festival Charities for 2009 is the Cat Survival Trust, based on a 12-acre site near Welwyn and with projects abroad.

Part of the Trust's function is to act as a rescue organisation for unwanted cats - not just domestic but large cats from zoos and other collections, of which there are about 40 currently in care.

Normally, the site is not open to the public other than educational visits but, for Welwyn Festival Week, there will be daily visits by appointment. There will also be a pulic talk in the Civic Centre (small hall) on Thursday 25th June at 7.30pm, where you can find out more about their work and support it, if you wish, by a donation.

Staffed entirely by volunteers, the Cat Survival Trust raises money from sales at the shop in Codicote Road plus donations and membership subscriptions.

Welwyn Film Record Society

The WFRS comprises a small number of photgraphic and film enthusiasts who, over the years, have attended many of the events held in and around Welwyn.

For every Welwyn Festival, they select a three films from various years and give them a public airing in the Civic Centre. Many of these films include the Welwyn Festival itself!

On Tuesday 23rd June, the years selected include Discovering the Roman Baths, 1969 and last year, 2008.

On Thursday 25th June, films will be shown from 1977, 1981 and, for those who might miss Tuesday's showing, 2008 including last year's Welwyn Festival!

The venue for both evenings is the Civic Centre main hall, from 8pm to 10pm.

If you are an enthusiast about photographic filming or editing or Welwyn events and interested in helping to create these historic documentaries, the WFRS will be delighted to talk to you as they are actively seeking more members.

Duck Race Tickets are now available from the QVM/Danesbury Charity Shop in Welwyn High Street. They will also be available from 1st Welwyn Scout Group at the Street Market (20th June) and Family Fun Day (27th June).
There are 10 prizes including: iSYMPHONY DVD MICRO MUSICAL SYSTEM WITH iPOD DOCK ; TECHNIKA DAB/FM CLOCK RADIO ; TECHNIKA PORTABLE iPOD SPEAKER.

The Duck Race will take place at the end of the Family Fun Day.

Two Art Exhibitions to kick off this year's WelFest!

Friday 19th June, an evening of artistic viewing pleasure! Visit the Anneli Boon exhibition of contemporary art at 16 Mimram Place between 6pm and 8pm. Follow this from 7.30 pm at the Scout HQ in Lockleys Drive with a private viewing of Watercolour paintings from the Willow Watercolour Group.

Anneli Boon's exhibition is open to all. If you miss it, you can go along on Saturday or Sunday between 2pm and 7pm.

To visit Willow Watercolours on Friday, please call in advance for a ticket on 01438 84977. Their exhibition is also open on Saturday and Sunday between 10am and 4pm. Sunday features a Paint Show at 10am, where you can bring along a painting of your own for a critique, enjoy a painting demonstration and have a go at painting techniques. From 1pm, you can watch as a tree is painted in a matter of seconds and enjoy some complimentary tea and cake. There will also be a free prize draw for a beginner's painting lesson.

Also, in the Parish Rooms from 10am to 4pm on the Saturday, pop in to see the Welwyn Art Group's exhibition of paintings.
